I have hiked through both ways. Although shorter, the Ulu Kinta route (via Kem Seroja) is tougher than Tanjung Rambutan route in terms of the steepness and the almost vertical wall (5 stars wall) with ropes. (September 2009)

The Tanjung Rambutan route (via Kem View) is not as tough as the Ulu Kinta route but the challenges in this route are last water point to the summit takes around 6 to 7 hours (backpack with full loads including group equipment and 7 litres of water) and the bee hive at altitude 1,850 metres ("Port Penyengat"). (late April 2007 / early May 2007).

Reference is made to the article in the Word on the need to inform the police station 3 months before the trip. In practice, this is not so practical due to some other reasons. The best apporach is to write to the Forestry Department at least 2 to 4 weeks before the trip.

After getting approval and payment made for the permit, on the expedition day (a must perform procedure), lodge / file in your hiking plan together with the emergency contacts of the hikers and the permit with Tanjung Rambutan police station first. Then proceed to the Commando Camp near the starting point to perform the same procedure i.e. file in the emergency contact list of the hikers and the hiking plan.

In any emergency, the Tanjung Rambutan police station would alert the Commando Camp to perform the search and rescue operation.

in actual fact a written application 2 to 4 weeks before the trip to the forestry is still too close.... I remember my application took over 2 months to approve, I got the written approval permit 2 weeks after my hike .. hahaha ... imagine that.

I agree with you. Sometimes our government department takes some time to process and the best option is to follow closely with the application with the authorities.

I still remembered the trip to Korbu & Gayong in 2007. I only sent in the application 2 weeks before the expedition date via Pos Laju (normally it will take a day or 2 days to reach). The approval came in 3 days before the trip by fax. The original copies of the approval was received one week after the trip ends due to postal delay. A few days before the approval came in I did follow closely on th estatus of the application with the authorities.
